To a mixture of 2- amino-5-chlorobenzonitrile (5.0 g, 32.8 mmol) and hydroxylamine hydrochloride (2.56 g, 36.8 mmol) in water (1 mL) and EtOH (30 mL) was added sodium methoxide (25% wt. soln; 9 mL) and the mixture heated to reflux for 16 hrs. After cooling, 3M NaOH solution was added (75 mL) and the volatiles removed in vacuo. The remaining aqueous phase was washed with DCM, separated and then adjusted to pH~4 by the addition of IN HC1 solution. Filtration and washing of the subsequent precipitate with water gave the N-hydroxybenzimidamide as a colorless solid used without further purification.

To the obtained crude product, 30 mL of toluene was added, and the mixture was dissolved under heating at 60 C. The resulting solution was left standing still at room temperature for 12 hours, and the precipitated crystal was collected by filtration, spray-washed with cooled toluene and dried at 60 C. under reduced pressure to obtain 87.7 g of Intermediate (d) (white powder, yield: 69.3%). The NMR measurement results of Intermediate (d) obtained are as follows. 1H NMR (300 MHz, d-DMSO) 8.74 (s, 1H), 7.99 (s, 1H), 6.87 (s, 4H), 5.35 (s, 2H), 1.24 (s, 18H).

A 4.0 g portion was recrystallized from methanol/water to give 3.5 g of an analytically pure white powder, m.p. 175-178 C.

General procedure: Into an oven-dried flask equipped with a magnetic stir bar was added aryl fluoride (1.00 g, 1.0 eq.), Na2S (1.1 eq.) and DMF (5 mL) under argon. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 h. Then 1 M NaOH (50 mL) was added and was washed with CH2Cl2 (2 x 25 mL). The aqueous layer was acidified to pH ~ 1-2 with 6 N HCl and extracted with CH2Cl2 (2 x 50 mL). The combined organic layer was washed with brine (50 mL), dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to provide a crude residue. To the residue was added 10% HCl (40 mL) and cooled with an ice-water bath. Then zinc dust (4 g) was added and the mixture was stirred for 1 h. Then EtOAc (100 mL) was added and the mixture was stirred for an additional 30 minutes. The organic layer was separated and washed with water (40 mL) and brine (40 mL), dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to provide the desired product with satisfactory purity.
