Removal of the solvent under reduced pressure and chromatography of the residue on silica gel gave 1.008 g (46% of theory) of a mixture of erythro- and threo-methyl 4-cyano-4-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-3-(5-fluoropyridin-3-yl)butanoate (erythro-Ibb748:threo-Ibb748=60:40). The configuration was assigned by comparison of the chemical shifts of the respective CHCN doublets at 4.12 ppm and 4.48 ppm, respectively, in the 1H-NMR (CDCl3).
