Consequently, a new class of macrocycle namely calix[3]acridan was conveniently synthesized in 90% yield. The host-guest cocrystal formed by calix[3]acridan and 1,2-dicyanobenzene exhibited efficient TADF properties due to intense intermol. charge transfer interactions. Moreover, the spatially separated HOMO and LUMO resulted in a very small singlet-triplet energy gap of 0.014 eV and hence guaranteed an efficient reverse intersystem crossing for TADF. Especially, a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 70% was achieved, and it represents the highest value among the reported intermol. donor-acceptor TADF materials.

Three norbornene-functional mono-benzoxazines with attached nitrile group at the para-, meta-, and ortho-position with respect to the nitrogen atom in the oxazine ring, resp., have been synthesized to investigate the isomeric effect of nitrile group on the polymerization and thermal properties of resulting polybenzoxazines. The chem. structures of newly obtained benzoxazine monomers are investigated by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy. Besides, the polymerization behaviors including oxazine ring, nitrile group as well as norbornene functionality in each benzoxazine are studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ FT-IR. In addition, the thermal properties of corresponding polybenzoxazines are investigated by TGA. The nitrile group at ortho-position in benzoxazine has been found to be easier activated to polymerize compared with other two isomers. Moreover, the resulting polybenzoxazine derived from ortho-nitrile containing benzoxazine also shows the best thermal stability with a Td5 of 371°C, and a char yield of 56%.

We demonstrate that a nonmagnetic mol. is changed into magnetic when its internal structure is rotated by forming an ordered film on a metal surface. We used a double-decker complex, bis(phthalocyaninato)cerium (CePc2), where the valence of the Ce atom changes between +3 and +4 with a small energy barrier. CePc2 is nonmagnetic in bulk and becomes magnetic in the monolayer film on Au(111). The intra-mol. structure and the magnetic property are revealed using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. We attribute the mechanism to a change of the rotational angle (θ) between the upper and lower Pc ligands, driven by the steric repulsive force originating from forming an almost square lattice on Au(111). The θ changes from θ = 45° of the bulk value into θ = 0° for the film. GGA + U calculation indicates that the change from θ = 45° to θ = 0° causes the Ce valence change from the nonmagnetic +4 state into the magnetic +3 state.

Equilibrium conversions for the direct condensation of MeOH and EtOH with CO2 to give dimethyl- and di-Et carbonate, resp., have been calculated over a range of exptl. relevant conditions. The validity of these calculations has been verified in both batch and continuous flow experiments over a heterogeneous CeO2 catalyst. Operating under optimized conditions of 140°C and 200 bar CO2, record productivities of 235 mmol/L·h DMC and 241 mmol/L·h DEC have been achieved using neat alc. dissolved in a continuous flow of supercritical CO2. Using our thermodn. model, we show that to achieve maximum product yield, both dialkyl carbonates and water should be continuously removed from the reactor instead of the conventionally used strategy of removing water alone, which is much less efficient. Catalyst stability rather than activity emerges as the prime limiting factor and should thus become the focus of future catalyst development.

Under such very high thermal stresses, the behavior of the elec. insulation is not well understood. This work proposes an anal. of the decomposition gases under very high temperatures and the corresponding degradation pathway. A simple method is proposed to identify whether the insulation of such motors has been strongly damaged during the working time at very high temperatures, thus allowing estimating if it can still continue to operate.

Alumina-coated graphite (Al2O3@graphite) core-shell particles were firstly synthesized by a liquid-phase chem. precipitation with the aid of sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) surfactant using an inorganic precursor, then to fabricate thermally conductive and elec. insulating phthalonitrile composites by a hot-compression method. The obtained composite with 40 wt% Al2O3@graphite exhibited a thermal conductivity of 1.409 W/mK, 6.6 times that of pristine phthalonitrile matrix (0.214 W/mK). And the composites still retained elec. insulation below 20 wt% Al2O3@graphite content. Moreover, excellent thermal stabilities had been observed, compared with the glass transition temperature of pristine phthalonitriles (460°C), the glass transition temperature of the composites decreased slightly but still high. Addnl., at 20 wt% content, the weight loss temperature (T5 and T10) and the char yield at 1000°C (Yc1000) were 525°C, 589°C and 74.9% which was 8°C, 14°C and 3.1% higher than that of pristine phthalonitriles, resp., which holds potential for use in the high temperature thermal management.

The surface modification method was used in the preparation of serine-grafted MCM-41 and led to the development of MCM-41@Serine. The reaction of MCM-41@Serine with Ce(NH4)2(NO3)6·2H2O or ErCl3·6H2O in ethanol under reflux led to the organization of MCM-41@Serine/Ce and MCM-41@Serine/Er catalysts. The structures of these catalysts were determined using SEM, mapping, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform-IR, thermogravimetric anal., X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller anal. These MCM-41@Serine/Ce and MCM-41@Serine/Er catalysts showed outstanding catalytic performance in sulfides oxidation and synthesis of 5-substituted tetrazoles. These catalysts can be recycled for seven repeated reaction runs without showing a considerable decrease in catalytic performance.
