To a degassed solution of intermediate 16 (75 mg, 0.06 mmol) and 3- (dicyanomethylidene)indan-l -one (87 mg, 0.45 mmol) in chloroform (1 .9 cm3) is added pyridine (0.36 cm3, 4.46 mmol) and the reaction mixture stirred at 23 C for 18 hours. Methanol (40 cm3) is added and the resulting suspension filtered and washed with methanol (3 x 10 cm3).
