A solvent- and metal-free protocol for preparation of N-aryl substituted azacycles I (R1 = Ph, 2,4-difluorophenyl, 3-methylphenyl, etc.; R2 = H, Me; n = 1, 2; R3R4 = H, CH2=CH-CH=CH2) from arylamines R1NH2 and cyclic ethers such as THF, 2-methyloxolane, oxane, etc. is described. In this method, the combination of POCl3 and DBU is crucial for conversion of arylamines and cyclic ethers to five- and six-membered azacycles I. Without solvent, a variety of N-aryl-substituted, five-membered azacycles (pyrrolidines, 2-methylpyrrolidines, and piperidine) and six-membered azacycles (isoindolines and tetrahydroisoquinolines) I is synthesized in high yields. This green method provides a sustainable and efficient approach for the preparation of azacycles I from various cyclic ethers.
