Vacuum distillation of the chloroform extract and then chromatography (CHCl3, silica column) of the distillation residues gave 4-(5-methyl-3-nitropyrid-2-yl)-4,4-bis (carbethoxy)-butyronitrile (24.5 g) as a yellow solid m.p. 48-49 C.

After drying and concentration on vacuo an orange oil was obtained which was distilled in vacuo to give the title compound as a colourless liquid (98.05 g, 87.5%) b.pt. 98-100/0.4 mm.

After removal of the solvent by evaporation, the residue was purified by neutral silica gel column chromatography (chloroform/ethyl acetate/methanol) to obtain compound (6a) (151.8 mg, yield 54%) as a white foamy substance.
