Facile nucleophilic substitution of coordinated acetonitrile in trans-[PtCl4(NCMe)(PPh3)]

Preparation of Amorphous Poly(aryl ether nitrile ketone) and Its Composites with Nano Hydroxyapatite for 3D Artificial Bone Printing

PEEK had been used to fabricate artificial bones by 3D printing widely, but it expressed unsatisfactory interlayer performance of 3D printing and weak compatibility with nano hydroxyapatite(nHA) due to the limits of molecular structures. Here an amorphous poly(aryl ether ketone) for 3D bone printing, PEK-CN, was designed and synthesized via nucleophilic substitution from 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone, phenolphthalein and 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile, which possessed much stronger interlayer strength due to van der Waals force between polar groups(-CNs). Specifically, the stronger interlayer strength resulted in lower porosity(3% with 100% infill rate) and more comparable mechanical properties(the maximum tensile strength was similar to 110 MPa) to cortical bone. Importantly, PEK-CN had passed in vitro cytotoxicity testing and samples of human mandible and maxillary bones based on PEKCN were printed by fused deposition modeling(FDM) successfully. Moreover, PEK-CN/nHA composites were obtained to enhance bioactivity of resin, and PEK-CN without limits of crystal lattices expressed excellent compatibility with nano hydroxyapatite. Our work provided a high performance resin for 3D bone printing, which would bring better solutions for artificial bone materials.

A integrated process for nitrilase-catalyzed asymmetric hydrolysis and easy biocatalyst recycling by introducing biocompatible biphasic system

The whole-cell nitrilase-catalyzed asymmetric hydrolysis of nitriles is a green and efficient preparation approach for chiral carboxylic acids, but often suffers from toxicity and cell lysis from organic substrates. In this work, a novel integrated process for whole-cell nitrilase-catalyzed asymmetric hydrolysis was developed for the first time by introducing a biocompatible ionic liquid (IL)-based biphasic system. The whole-cell nitrilases displayed an outstanding stability and recyclability in the biphasic system and still retained > 85% activity even after 7 cycles reaction. A preparative-scale fed-batch hydrolysis of o-chloromandelonitrile to (R)-o-chloromandelic acid (RCMA) was performed using the integrated process. The results revealed a yield of 91.3% and a space-time yield of 746.4 g.L-1.d(-1), which are currently the highest reported values for R-CMA biosynthesis. The proposed integrated process avoids substrate inhibition, facilitates the reusability of whole-cell nitrilases, and thus shows great potential for the sustainable production of chiral carboxylic acids.

Half-Sandwich Iridium Complexes for the One-Pot Synthesis of Amides: Preparation, Structure, and Diverse Catalytic Activity

Several types of air-stable N,O-coordinate half-sandwich iridium complexes containing Schiff base ligands with the general formula [Cp*IrClL] were synthesized in good yields. These stable iridium complexes displayed a good catalytic efficiency in amide synthesis. A variety of amides with different substituents were obtained in a one-pot procedure with excellent yields and high selectivities through the amidation of aldehydes with NH2OH center dot HCl and nitrile hydration under the catalysis of complexes 1-4. The excellent and diverse catalytic activity, mild conditions, broad substance scope, and environmentally friendly solvent make this system potentially applicable in industrial production. Industrial by product dumped from iron making industry (slag) has been modified by various chemical agents, particularly, paraffin wax, liquid nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and silane coating agent. The modified slag powder samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the corresponding differential thermal gravimetric (DTG). As further evidence on the effectiveness of the modification process, the modified slag samples were subjected to attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR). The potential of the modified slag as reinforcement for unsaturated polyester (UPE) composites were studied. The mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of the fabricated composites were inspected as a function of modification type.

Seasonal Variation of Glucosinolate Hydrolysis Products in Commercial White and Red Cabbages (Brassica oleracea var. capitata)

Brassica vegetables contain glucosinolates, which are well-known for their potential to form health-promoting isothiocyanates. Among those crucifers, white and red cabbage are commonly consumed vegetables, exhibiting different glucosinolate and hydrolysis profiles thereof. Regarding the health beneficial effects from these vegetables, more information, especially concerning the seasonal variation of glucosinolate profiles and the formation of their bioactive hydrolysis products in commercial cabbages, is needed. In this study, glucosinolates and glucosinolate hydrolysis product profiles in red and white cabbages from three different food retailers were monitored over six different sampling dates across the selling season in autumn. For the first time, it was shown that, while glucosinolate profiles were similar in each cabbage variety, glucosinolate hydrolysis product profiles and hydrolysis behavior varied considerably over the season. The highest total isothiocyanate concentrations were observed in conventional red (1.66 mu mol/g FW) and organic white (0.93 mu mol/g FW) cabbages purchased at the first sampling date in September. Here, red cabbage was with up to 1.06 mu mol/g FW of 4-(methylsulfinyl)butyl isothiocyanate (sulforaphane), an excellent source for this health-promoting isothiocyanate. Cabbages purchased 11 weeks later in autumn released lower levels of isothiocyanates, but mainly nitriles and epithionitriles. The results indicate that commercial cabbages purchased in early autumn could be healthier options than those purchased later in the year.

Bacterial profiles and volatile flavor compounds in commercial Suancai with varying salt concentration from Northeastern China

Suancai, a popular traditional fermented cabbage in northeast China, is commonly prepared by the spontaneous fermentation process at a certain salt concentration. The salt can affect the metabolites by affecting the microorganisms during Suancai fermentation. The bacterial community and volatile flavor compounds in commercial Suancai from different regions of Northeastern China at different salt concentrations were investigated using next-generation sequencing and GC-MS. Firmicutes and Cyanobacteria were the dominant phyla in the commercial Suancai, and Lactobacillus, Pediococcus, and Leuconostoc were the dominant genera. Among them, Lactobacillus and Pediococcus were considered as the biomarkers of the low and high salt Suncai, respectively. Eighty-five volatile flavor compounds were detected, and HS exhibited higher contents of volatile flavor compounds than LS. Based on the results of correlation analysis, Pediococcus were highly correlated with the alcohols and nitriles in Suancai. The contents of alcohols and nitriles significantly increased in the Suancai, fermented by Pediococcus pentosaceus. The co-inoculated fermentation of Lactobacillus plantarum and P. pentosaceus could increase the concentrations of alcohols, esters, aldehydes, hydrocarbons, and nitriles in Suancai. This study provides a perspective for understanding the ecology of Suancai fermentation and facilitating the fermentation with multispecies inoculation fermentation at an appropriate salt concentration.
