The mixture is cooled to 0 in an ice bath and 50% sodium hydroxide is added until strongly basic. The precipitate is removed by filtration. The precipitate is washed three times with ethyl acetate. The combined ethyl acetate extracts are shaken thoroughly with the aqueous filtrate. The phases are separated and the organic phase dried over magnesium sulfate. The drying agent is removed by filtration and the filtrate evaporated to dryness in vacuo. There is obtained 16.0 gm. of white crystalline solid that melts at 89-92.

The crude material was purified by silica gel column chromatography eluting with 10% EtOAc/Hexane to afford compound H as a mixture of its enolic form (950 mg, 67.8%) as a pale yellow liquid. 1H NMR (500 MHz, DMSO-^): delta 8.40 (s, 1H), 8.31-8.22 (m, 1H), 8.19-8.12 (m, 1H), 7.77-7.75 (m, 1H), 4.29 (s, 2H), 3.64 (s, 3H).
