For the first time very electron-rich (carbazol-3-yl, dimethylaminophenyl, pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrolyl), and sterically hindered substituents (naphthalen-1-yl, quinolin-4-yl, acridin-9-yl, imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-1-yl, 2-bromophenyl etc.) can be appended to the diketopyrrolopyrrole core by condensation of an appropriate nitrile with a pyrrolidin-2-one intermediate. Even greater synthetic possibilities are related to the fact that such demanding substituents as 4-dimethylaminophenyl, indol-3-yl, and 2-methoxyphenyl can be incorporated from aldehyde precursors, bypassing problems with the nitriles reactivity.

An economically efficient and environmentally benign approach for the direct oxidative transformation of aldehydes to nitriles was developed using com. available non-toxic copper acetate as an inexpensive catalyst and ammonium acetate as the source of nitrogen in the presence of aerial oxygen as an eco-friendly oxidant under ligand-free conditions. The reactions were associated with high yield and various sensitive moieties like allyloxy, benzyloxy, t-butyldimethylsilyloxy, hetero-aryl, formyl, keto, chloro, bromo, methylenedioxy and cyano were well tolerated in the aforesaid method. The kinetic studies showed first order dependency on the aldehyde substrate in the reaction rate. The reaction was faster with the electron deficient aldehydes as confirmed by Hammett anal. Moreover, the present oxidative method was effective on larger scales showing potential for industrial application.

An efficient iron catalyst, Cp*Fe(1,2-Cy2PC6H4O), which rapidly converts various aliphatic and aromatic aldoximes RCH=NOH [R = Pr, Ph, 2H-1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl, etc.] to nitriles RCN with release of H2O at room temp was reported. The catalysis involves redox activation of the N-O bond by a 1e- transfer from the iron catalyst to the oxime. Such redox-mediated N-O cleavage was demonstrated by the isolation of a ferrous iminato intermediate from the reaction of the ketoxime substrate. This iron-catalyzed acceptorless dehydration approach represents a general method for the preparation of nitriles, and it also delivers salicylonitriles R1CN(2-OH) [R1 = Ph, 3-methoxyphenyl, naphthalen-1-yl, etc.] catalyzing the Kemp elimination reaction.

Here we describe the probe design considerations and features, as well as an inhouse developed data processing routine designed to extract accurate mass spectrometry imaging data from ambient laser ablation post-ionization experiments We characterize the probe performance in both APCI and ESI mode on a selection of compounds and show improved pixel-to-pixel repeatability for LA-APCI as compared to LAESI. We apply the dual ionization probe in APCI mode in a time series experiment to monitor agrochems. on tomato plants. We investigate the translocation of fungicide isotianil and one of its metabolites, anthranilonitrile, by mass spectrometry imaging over a period of two weeks after application on a leaf surface. LA-APCI-MSI shows translocation of anthranilonitrile from treated leaves towards non-treated leaves. In summary, we demonstrate that LA-APCI imaging is a valuable addition to the ambient mass spectrometry toolbox, with particular advantages for imaging experiments across a variety of compounds

The synthesis and characterization of a new Cu(II) complex, LNIS2CuII (LNIS = o-iminobenzosemiquinone), are reported. X-ray crystallog. studies showed that two o-iminobenzosemiquinone radicals form a distorted square-planar geometry around the Cu(II) center of LNIS2CuII. Magnetic measurements revealed the paramagnetic character of the complex caused by the presence of three unpaired electrons located on the o-iminobenzosemiquinonate ligands and the CuII center. Magnetochem. experiments, and EPR and DFT studies prove that the ground state of the complex is a doublet, which is consistent with the ferromagnetic coupling between Cu(II) and o-iminobenzosemiquinone centers and stronger antiferromagnetic coupling between the iminobenzosemiquinone moieties. The ligand-centered redox reactions of the complex were studied by cyclic voltammetry. Aerobic oxidation of alcs. to aldehydes with TEMPO was studied in the presence of LNIS2CuII. Furthermore, LNIS2CuII is an efficient catalyst in homo-coupling of terminal alkynes.
